This is so sad – a cultural problem that just doesn’t seem to go away:

A month-and-a-half old baby, whose mother had refused to accept her saying she had delivered a baby boy, died at a government hospital in Gwalior.

A DNA report to decide the parentage was awaited even as the presumed parents continued to accuse the hospital of swapping their baby with a baby girl.

“Had the mother fed her the infant had a high chance of survival but she kept away and turned up only for the DNA test,’’ hospital dean Dr Veena Agrawal told The Indian Express.

Hailing from Sherpur village in Bhind district, Keshav Jatav had admitted his wife at a clinic in Gwalior on June 20. The couple have two daughters. Laxmi delivered a baby early next morning but the infant had to be rushed to Kamla Raja Hospital because it was in a critical condition. The couple disowned her and later produced papers from the private clinic in support of their claim.

A committee set up by the government hospital to probe the allegation, however, found that a baby girl had been admitted.

A post-mortem was conducted on Sunday and the entire procedure was recorded.
