Earl Scruggs has died at age 88. Earl revolutionized the way the banjo is played and caused the instrument to be thought of as more than an odd ensemble instrument, becoming a lead instrument in bluegrass music. I love the sound of the banjo, and I still plan to get back to learning to play it one day. Anyway, here’s Earl in his prime, playing his classic piece “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” The speed of his playing is amazing!
Here’s another version when Earl played with Steve Martin.
Whatever you think of banjo music, there’s no doubt that we’ve lost a great musician.
