Time to get serious about my cooking. There’s not much time left!

Early on we had a division of duties – Kerry mixes the dough and I do the cutting and cooking. This meant I got the kids and the mess and she gets to eat the results. Here’s the recipe:

3 and 3/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 cup shortening
1 and 3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
3 tablespoons milk

Sift together dry ingredients. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well. Add 1 cup of sifted dry ingredients. Stir in milk. Add remaining dry ingredients. Roll 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with sugar (or not if you’re going to add frosting). Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes on greased cookie sheet.

For frosting, mix 1/2 cup shortening, 2 cups powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, and 1 tablespoon light corn syrup. Cream the shortening and half the sugar with an electric mixer, then add the rest of the sugar. Once all the sugar is added, add the milk and corn syrup. Mix about 2 minutes. Separate the frosting and add food coloring as needed.
