Always bet on corporations and individuals figuring out how to outsmart governments. In a Nanny State move, the city of San Francisco banned Happy Meals. Actually they passed a city ordinance that prohibited including toys in meals that didn’t meet certain nutritional standards. I guess the theory is that Happy Meals and the toys in them are the reason children have bad eating habits and are becoming obese. Couldn’t have anything to do with parenting or personal responsibility.
Well, McDonalds has outsmarted the San Francisco City Council. Happy Meals now come without a toy in San Francisco, but you can add the toy for an additional 10 cents. My guess is that most purchases of happy Meals will gladly add the upcharge to get the toy, so not only did the Happy Meal survive this law, but now McDonalds gets to make additional revenue by selling the toy. You gotta love it!
